Sammaël (Sam, as he introduces himself to anyone outside the Dalish) is a Keeper, a mage, and a charismatic, natural-born leader. He ascribes to the idea that more flies are caught with honey than vinegar, and he's spent years learning to listen to others with empathy in an attempt to build a consistent bond between the various Dalish clans between gatherings at the Arlathvhen. He is warm, patient, and indulgent, in contrast to his passion for history and culture.

He's instinctively altruistic. Despite living a very solitary life, he believes deeply in rebuilding Dalish heritage, and he approaches all Elvhen with an open hand, no matter the clan. He has an intensely genuine belief in the reinvigoration of the Dalish as a people.

Sam practices rigorous tolerance. He approaches prejudice with an offer to teach and communicate, but a rejection of that good will can lead to a very cool, diplomatic interaction that Sam will try to end as quickly as possible. Sam is deeply conflict-averse. He will always try to keep the peace, and while he won't compromise his ideals, he will avoid or downplay a negative interaction in order to maintain a stable environment. This doesn't extend to out-and-out bigotry, but he will always opt for a careful, controlled engagement that doesn't explode into legitimate fighting.

Sam is, fundamentally, a kind person, given to caretaking and teaching. He adores animals, and he travels astride the halla that he raised from a fawn. Though Sam did not study the Vir Tanadhal, he carries the same reverence of all creatures, and he shows gratitude and respect when he hunts for himself.
HISTORY
TO BE EXPANDED QUICK RUNDOWN
Sam left his clan when he was 21, and he's spent almost 11 years exploring across Thedas, moving between various Dalish communities. As a traveling Keeper, he helps spread word of events affecting elves; he carries news of violence or skirmishes, new births, deaths, relocation, and more. Traveling Keepers also convene with established Keepers outside of the Arlathvhen to discuss lore and artifacts, sharing knowledge in a hope to preserve more of their history.

Prior to the events at the Conclave, Sam had been traveling the Free Marches in the hopes of helping mages uprooted by the rebellion – either by directing any Elvhen to nearby clans or by aiding apostates' attempts to avoid Templars. He received news of the Divine's attempt to broker peace, and he decided to spy on the events, to better report back to the Dalish on how they could expect to be impacted by the negotiations.

And then the world exploded.

For RP: Sam's worldstate is fluid! I'm happy to play him as either a companion or the Inquisitor, with any game choices that seem most appropriate to a thread. Let me know if you have preferences or if you'd like to hash anything out beforehand!

ABILITIES
ONE WITH NATURE: The keeper's bond with the earth creates a defensive shield that immobilizes the keeper for as long as this spell is active, but inflicts nature damage and a penalty to movement speed on any enemy that enters the field.
THORNBLADES: The keeper calls roots from beneath the earth to inflict physical damage on all enemies within the field created by One With Nature. The roots also knock enemies back unless they pass a physical resistance check.
REPLENISHMENT: No living thing can escape the cycle of life; all who fall return to the earth. The mage regains some health whenever a spell inflicts damage.
NATURE'S VENGEANCE: The keeper summons gigantic roots from within the ground to attack all enemies in the area, impaling the opponents for a short time unless they pass a physical resistance check.
MARK OF THE RIFT: The Inquisitor momentarily opens a rift with their Anchor, briefly sundering the Veil and sucking their enemies physically into the Fade.
WEAKNESSES
SUSCEPTIBLE TO FIRE: Most of Sam's spells are based around nature and growth; fire can make a serious dent in his defenses.
SQUISHY: Sam is a mage; they aren't known for their durability.
SELF-SACRIFICING: Often deprioritizes himself over others.
FLUCTUATING SELF-ESTEEM: Sam defines his self-esteem by whether he is able to live up to his ideals, and sometimes asks for criticism more out of insecurity than out of confidence, always wondering what he could do better.
STRUGGLES TO MAKE TOUGH DECISIONS: If caught between a rock and a hard place, Sam can be stricken with paralysis, imagining all the consequences of his actions, especially if those consequences are humanitarian.
